Surfside-inspired legislation gets traction

by The 100 Companies

In the wake of the Surfside condo disaster, one of three bills updating condominium regulations is getting traction – potentially becoming the first update in 60 years.

Republican Sen. Jennifer Bradley has proposed SB 1702, which would require a two-part inspection at the 30-year mark for multifamily buildings three stories and taller. And then once every 10 years thereafter. Buildings within three miles of the coastline receive inspections after 20 years and every seven years thereafter.

Ninety-eight people died in the implosion of the 12-story Champlain Towers South in June 24’s predawn hours, making the worst U.S. building disasters list.
